The first tactic of every scam, also known as alpha tactics, is the strategy that consists of increasing of the attractiveness of something. Second, omega tactics, decreases resistance to something. In the first case, you should do everything it takes to make your proposal more attractive. We are developing the story behind it: why is this unique opportunity, why are you the perfect person to do so, what benefits will have all people who decide to participle in this project. In the second case, we are doing all you we can to present the idea so simple, in order to convince people that they don’t have to be worry about it and that they would definitely be able to achieve tier goals.
When the settlers arrived, they were shocked
This strategy can be described something like this: you can convince me in anything if you persuade me that I want this and that there are no risks about it.
Psychologist Tori Higgins from the University of Columbia, believes that people can be easily affected one way or another: some are focused on progress and potential benefits, and other losses and avoiding mistakes. An approach that combines the alpha and omega of the tactic is acceptable for both the mindset and has universal appeal, and McGregor’s proposal is an example of this powerful combination.
He published newspaper interviews in which he promoted the benefits of investment and life in Peru. He emphasized the courage and strength of the potential investors: these people would not be only intelligent, but also a real man. Scottish highlanders are known for their endurance and adventurous spirit, he wrote; and this land would be the perfect place for them. At the same time, it was a challenge and a gift. To those that were not so easy to convince, he suggested to the book about the values of the small island nation of so-called Thomas (actually McGregor personally), which indicates a tantalizing opportunity and warns not to miss the perfect moment.
McGregor tactic was more than successful. Not only he collected direct investment of 200,000 pounds- the value of government bonds of this project on the stock exchange during his lifetime reached 1.3 million pounds or 3.6 billion pounds today. Of course, where people arrived there, they found nothing but the desert and wild forests.
