Auschwitz

Hans volunteered with his brother for service in the British army with his brother in 1939. Although he was aware of the true nature of Nazism, the scene that he found when entering the camp Bergen Belsen overcame all his worst fears.

American and English soldiers were appalled by scenes they found - tens of thousands of dead people, of which remained only skin and bones, gas chambers, torture devices, crematoria ...

After this experience Alexander became a member of the team that was supposed to investigate war crimes.

When examining the heads of Bergen Belsen, he came to a number of important information about the functioning of the system throughout the Reich, but also about possible destinations where they could escape the inclement camp commanders.

After the liberation of Auschwitz, Rudolf Hess and his family moved to flee to Denmark. The British were very fast in Flensburg caught his wife and children, but not Hess.

Alexander was in charge to find out from that Hess's wife where her husband was hiding. He applied the old non-violent method that almost always works - threatened with the Russians.

He gave Hess’ wife a piece of paper and a pencil and told her that if not tell where her husband and where he is hiding, her son Klaus will be send the Russians to Siberia.

When Alexander returned to the room, he found a note on paper. It said that Rudolf Hess was hiding on a farm under a false name Franz Lang. It was a huge success because until then, none could get single information from her. Alexander was thrilled.

Hess got caught in his pajamas in a stable farm, located near the Danish border, where he worked as a laborer.

After being badly beaten, Hess admitted his true identity, and he was committed to the International Military Tribunal in Nuremberg, where he gave the first authoritative and detailed account of the whole system of Auschwitz.

Because of his testimony, leaders of the Reich could not deny the crimes that took place in the concentration camps.

Alexander kept this secret until the very end of his life. One day, he decided to reveal his loved ones that he was caught Hess, and that he is one of the world's most successful Nazi hunters.

Since he was considered to be a great joker, the majority of the relatives understood this statement as a joke. However, Thomas Harding, journalist, and Alexander's nephew, was not think so, and he decided to investigate the “joke”.
