The Ancient Mystery of the Caucasus

Have you ever heard about the Caucasus mystery- the region that is home of the strange and little known ancient cultures? The ancient Greeks and great philosophers of that time considered this area as a truly cradle of knowledge. This is not strange at all, especially if we know that people believe this region was the place where Prometheus was chained to a mountain and let to the crows after he stole the knowledge of fire from the Olympic gods. This was crucial for all later human civilization, because, according to the legend, it was the beginning of the human independent thinking. In that way, princess Medea, the daughter of the famous king Aetes, ruler of Colchis ( part of the former Soviet Union and now the independent Republic of Georgia), allegedly had some special knowledge of the healing.

Huge Mystery

Unfortunately, we do not know much about this ancient civilization and it is still a huge mystery to us. The reason for that is very simple. There have been very little exploration of the archeological sites. However, one of the most intrigue aspects of that culture is the famous sculptures of Cyclops or megalithic. They are placed all over the area.

Although we do not know much about these structures, we can say that are very similar to other mysterious sculptures around the globe, such as Stonehenge, or those that are found in Malta, Tiahuanaco or Baalbek. In opposite to those sites, scientists were limited with exploration in the Caucasus region, primarily because these locations are isolated and very hard to access.

Some of the best preserved pieces are found in the Tsalka province in Georgia, which is also known as Kldekari historical reserve. Some of them are placed on the Trialeti mountains, at high of more than 1.600 meters. According to the historians, they originate from first millennium B.C.

Strange Objects

Archeologists discovered a bunch of barrows and underground tunnel systems, so as a fortress and defending towers. In the area that is very close to the Tejisi village, we have a huge five meters tall menhir structure that is installed in the old church. People believe that this sculpture emits some sort of the radiation and they are trying to avoid it. It is also shaped almost perfect and has rounded back with ideally flat front part.

It is not all, of course. Next interesting site is in the Akhalkalaki region, just near the Paravani Lake. There are beautiful old fortress that was built at more than 2.700 meters above the sea level. The third important site is so called great rocks of Gochnari or Gochnaris Lodovani that is placed in the valley of the Algeti River, just near the ancient Manglisi town.

Scientists do not know what was the purpose of these magnificent structures and why ancient people from the Bronze Age decided to build them in the first place. We just do not have enough reliable data. We can just guess.
