The first person who actually saw it was a former keeper who was on his ride in the area near the local graveyard. He spotted the strange light above the remains of the burned Min Min Hotel. The keeper explained the light balls from the sky followed him on his way back to the town.
Aboriginals, native people in Australia, have a bunch of stories about the strange lights in their stories and legends. However, some Aboriginals are not superstitious and they believe the myths about the light balls are the product of the European people, who are prone to the spectacle.
