Pyramids of Tenerife Island
Tenerife Island is, without any doubt, one of the most prestigious places for holiday- endless sand beaches, crystal- clear sea and warm sunrays are just some of the greatest trumps of this paradise in the Canary Islands archipelago.
More Than Tourism
However, this is definitely not all that we can find in this tourist’s Mecca. It is less known that Tenerife Island is a place of some of the strangest buildings and constructions in the world.
These beautiful and mysteries objects are famous pyramids that can be found all over the island. The most popular among the tourists is pyramid in small town Guimar- precious beauty that was discovered by the world known adventurer and explorer Thor Heyerdahl. He was literally spell- bounded with the pyramids that he decided to settle on the island and to build the house. He spent the last ten years in his Tenerife house.
Although Heyerdahl was an excellent and famous explorer, it is interesting that he first heard about the strange building in the local press, where it was described as stone terraces, probably made by the local farmers. Experienced explorer did not believe in this theory and he assumed the buildings were something more serious than some ordinary agricultural objects. He was assuming the objects were ancient step-pyramids, the fascinating buildings similar to those that were found in Peru and Mexico.
Ethnographic Park
Heyerdahl was not alone because the shipbuilding tycoon from Norway Fred Olsen soon joined the project. Two men have decided to establish an Ethnographic Park in mention city Guimar and it was opened in 1998. The whole building complex was built around the six pyramids.
Everything about these pyramids is a mystery. Everything except its persistence. Nobody knows who made this building and why. Heyerdahl had his own opinion over this issue. He thought the pyramids were made by the wandering tribe that traveled across the ocean in their rudimental rafts. Heyerdahl decided to prove his theory, which is the reason why he sailed on the ancient type of raft from Morocco to Barbados.
The main authorities in the archeology apparently did not have the same opinion and Heyerdahl’s theory was rejected.
Guanches People
There are some speculations the pyramids in Tenerife was made by the natives from Canary Islands- the Guanches people. According to some historians, these people have lived in the islands before the Spanish colonization and brutal invasion. Despite the fact Gauches were painted as savages and primitives who lived in caves, some archeologists still believe they were capable for building the pyramids.
We now know the Gauches were familiar with pyramidal forms, because they had object with that design. In addition, they knew about the mummification process, which is another reason why some believe they are real pyramid builders. Why? Just think about Egyptians and their mummies in the pyramids.
Some also think these buildings were used for sacral ceremonies, which is the reason why they all lined in order to the stars.
Pyramids in Tenerife Island are not located in Gumar; you can find them across the whole island, near the San Marcos, Santa Barbara, Santa Domingo and other cities.
