Dei Gratia was an ordinary merchandise ship, which sailed out from the New York harbor on December 1872. After twenty days of boring and monotony sailing, the crew spotted some ship that was moving in irregular trajectory, in opposite to the wind. They immediately warned their captain, who was resting in his cabin.

Captain Morehouse was a serious man and an experienced sailor who immediately realized the incoming ship was in some serious problem- its sails were in the wrong position. However, the ship was still approaching. The captain Morehouse ordered his sailors to communicate with unknown crew with speaking trumpet. It was useless. No one answered. It seemed the ship was abandoned.

Everybody Was Missing

Captain decided to send the men on the ship and sailors jumped in the rescue boat. They noticed the strange ship was Mary Celeste. When they climbed aboard, they were greeted with the silence. Nobody was there. Just the empty ship and sound of the waves and wind.

The first assumption was the ship was abandoned because of the sinking. However, sailors checked the bottom of the ship. There was just a small amount of the seawater, which could be easily thrown out with pumps. They were confused.

Everything was in the perfect condition. Except the missing crew. The strangest thing was that all their personal stuff, such as knives, money and pipes were on the board. It seemed they would be back any moment.

The food storage was also full, with supplies for a couple of months.

Sailors have returned to the mother ship, without any reasonable explanation of this strange situation. The only thing they knew was the ship was abandoned. According to the captain’s log, they realized the last marked position was 700 miles away and that the ship roamed for ten days.

Theories

The captain Morehouse finally decided to take the ship to the nearest harbor. The task was completed successfully and Mary Celeste sailed into Gibraltar harbor. It was on December 13.

In the beginning, nobody cared for the crew members because people thought they have boarder on another ship and that they would appear for a few days. However, the crew of the Mary Celeste never showed up.

Everybody was confused. Officials have started the investigation and the first assumption was the crew from the Dei Gratia killed all sailors. Money was the motive, investigators have assumed. This theory was discarded because the lack of the evidence and a number of the illogical facts. All money was still on the board, same as the load.

All later investigations failed to resolve the mystery of the Mary Celeste ship. Only God and Ocean know what happened to the crew. Their bodies have never been found. They are still missing.
